Ethicality Task

Ethicality

Task) Look back at what you decided you could collect to investigate further after looking at the sample data. How could you make what you collect more comparable/ethical/reliable? Write a list of all the factors you considered including problems.

In order to make the data I collected and my investigations as a whole ethical I would need to consider the fact of data being published or unpublished. If something is published then I wouldn’t need to worry about the privacy and copyright of the text, whereas if something was unpublished then I would have to ask for permission to use this data. Using the information about the editor’s letters in men and women’s magazines and Michael Gove’s comments on education would be acceptable to use as they are already published. Using the ‘live’ broadcasts and the beauty products adverts would also be fine because again they have been published. However, Brian Cox’s tweets may be a problem because you wouldn’t be sure if it was actually him writing those tweets or someone working for him or pretending to be him, therefore, not his actual moods, thoughts or feelings.

The factors I considered when worrying about ethicality were;

-          Whether the data would offend people or not

-          If the data was published or unpublished

-          The choice of language used, so if any taboo language was used which could offend people or be abusive.

Comparability

Task)

-          How far does the language of advertising vary according to the gender of the target audience?

-          How does a ‘live’ commentary on radio differ from one on television?

If I was to investigate how the language in adverts varies according to the gender of the target audience, I would choose the data of the top five women’s beauty products and the top five men’s beauty products. I would then discuss how, in both adverts they use the same techniques in persuading people to buy these products. For example, in the Venus Advert with Jennifer Lopez they use lexis like ‘the goddess in you’ and ‘inner beauty’. Using these persuade women to buy this product and also using a big style icon in the advert makes women think that if she uses it, they should use it.

In the Gillette Fusion Advert starring Theiry Henry, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer, it says ‘the most comfortable shave’ persuading men to buy this product, and also using those famous icons makes men think if they use it, then they should use it.

If I was too investigate the difference in a ‘live’ radio commentary and one on television the one variable would be that you can see the television broadcast whereas you can only hear the radio broadcast. The radio broadcaster will be use many adjectives in order to describe to the listeners what exactly is going on, they will talk constantly to inform the listeners of what they need to know and what they are listening too, however, on a television broadcast you can visual see what is happening so the commentator will not have to describe every single aspect of the viewing. If the data was a football match on both of the live handsets a radio broadcaster would say ‘Rooney’s just ran 40 yards and he’s passed to Gerrard’ whereas on the television the commentator would just say ‘Rooney passes to Gerrard’.

Reliability Task

Reliability

Task) how would you collect reliable data on the following topics;

-          Editor’s letters in women’s and men’s magazines

-          Brian Cox’s tweets

-          Michael Gove’s comments on education

If I was to look at an Editor’s letter in men’s and women’s magazines I would collect the same amount of samples for each gender, so three examples from a women’s magazine and 3 example’s from men’s magazine and compare the lexis used in each one to fine the similarities and the differences depending on the gender it is aimed at.

If I was to look at Brian Cox’s tweets, I would pick a generous selection, so maybe 6 or 7, and then I would be able to compare the day the tweet was posted and the mood or behaviour change over a period of time, therefore being able to analyse what you need to.

If I was to look at Michael Gove’s comments on education I would research interviews or transcripts of his comments and then apply the information given and the way he talks about education to any theories.

Data Analysis of a conversation between a child and an adult

Data Analysis.

Which data you chose and why?

The data I chose was a conversation between an adult and an almost 2 year old child. I chose this data because I have an interest in the language children use from and young age and how it develops when they grow older.

What you found and what theory you linked it to

When looking at this data I found that it included a lot of child directed speech from the adult, this is seen when the adult in included uses a higher pitch and exaggerated intonation. A: Nooooo^ (.) you don’t want that to be your name^ (3) you’re being silly [giggles] this is an example of how the parent in this video uses child directed speech as the ^ indicate a rise in pitch of her voice. Also the adjective of ‘silly’ is a very childlike word, it is unusual that an adult would use that word in conversation when directing at another adult. The theories that this links to are Jean Piaget (1896-1980) cognitive development theory which he stated that children cannot learn unless they are interacting with others and their environment and by making mistakes they learn from them. Another theory this links to is Jerome Bruner (1964) Bruner believes that the child has to learn for itself by making sense of their own environment.

What other data you can choose to go with it or replace it with to make an investigation

If I was to choose another data, I would choose a different video of a recorded child’s conversation who is aged 6 and another child who is aged 9 and compare all the types of language used to see how children’s language develop as they grow older.

What would you call that investigation?

I would name my investigation ‘The different language techniques used between children of different ages’. I would call it that because it lets people understand that it’s to do with the different language techniques children use at different ages.
