Data Analysis of a conversation between a child and an adult

Data Analysis.

Which data you chose and why?

The data I chose was a conversation between an adult and an almost 2 year old child. I chose this data because I have an interest in the language children use from and young age and how it develops when they grow older.

What you found and what theory you linked it to

When looking at this data I found that it included a lot of child directed speech from the adult, this is seen when the adult in included uses a higher pitch and exaggerated intonation. A: Nooooo^ (.) you don’t want that to be your name^ (3) you’re being silly [giggles] this is an example of how the parent in this video uses child directed speech as the ^ indicate a rise in pitch of her voice. Also the adjective of ‘silly’ is a very childlike word, it is unusual that an adult would use that word in conversation when directing at another adult. The theories that this links to are Jean Piaget (1896-1980) cognitive development theory which he stated that children cannot learn unless they are interacting with others and their environment and by making mistakes they learn from them. Another theory this links to is Jerome Bruner (1964) Bruner believes that the child has to learn for itself by making sense of their own environment.

What other data you can choose to go with it or replace it with to make an investigation

If I was to choose another data, I would choose a different video of a recorded child’s conversation who is aged 6 and another child who is aged 9 and compare all the types of language used to see how children’s language develop as they grow older.

What would you call that investigation?

I would name my investigation ‘The different language techniques used between children of different ages’. I would call it that because it lets people understand that it’s to do with the different language techniques children use at different ages.

  1. Good idea for looking at how child language develops. Could you get the same child at different ages somehow? See me for some help catching up.

  2. Maybe you should go more in depth in terms of theory

  3. This is very good Siobhan, you could analyse more selections of the text x
